Zopiclone is used
and prescribed for the short term treatment of
insomnia where falling sleep or regular
interruptions in sleep can cause the patient stress and
anxiety. Long term use is not recommended as
tolerance, dependence,
and addiction can occur with prolonged
use.
Adverse reactions
to zopiclone sleeping tablets
The side effect most commonly seen in clinical trials and
worldwide usage is a bitter, metallic taste, which is
usually fleeting in most users but can persist for a few
hours. Palpitations may occur in the daytime following
withdrawal from the drug after prolonged periods of use,
especially when taken for more than two weeks, after increased
dosage or on a nightly basis.
Zopiclone can induce short term amnesia. It can
also cause impairment of driving skills so care must
be taken not to use the medication while or close to
driving vehicles or machinery. This side effect is not unique
to zopiclone but also occurs with most other sleeping
tablets.

More common
reactions
Gastrointestinal (wind): taste
disturbances including a slight, bitter metallic taste or dry
mouth. Nervous system: disruption of REM sleep, double or
impaired vision, drowsiness, memory loss, dizziness,
headaches, and physical fatigue. Unexpected mood
changes have been noted in some individuals, which if
experienced you should immediately cease taking the pills and
consult your physician.
Special
precautions
Alcohol should not be consumed when using
zopiclone, as alcohol and zopiclone enhance the effects of each
other. And could lead to physical and mental
impairment.
Patients with liver
disease eliminate
zopiclone much slower than normal patients and in addition
experience exaggerated effects of the drug.
Zopiclone increases sway and
lack of balance, it increases the number of falls in older
people as well as cognitive side effects. Falls are a
significant cause of death in older people.
Zopiclone should never be
mixed with any other medication without first consulting you
physician.
